I have a Winnie the Pooh mug, with the wise words “Some days are more tumbly than others.” I bought it for ten cents from my friend Chris Steele at a garage sale. It’s my favorite. Every morning, Jonathan makes me a cup of peppermint tea in the tumbly mug. It makes me happy.
Thank you, Mystery Gift Giver, for the thoughtful and creative, yet anonymous wedding gift pictured at left.
I’m sure we will enjoy reading gory tales of the cannibalistic serial killer for years to come…
[Does anyone have friends weirder than ours?]
Stay tuned for Innovative Wedding Gifts, part deux.

On January 13th, 2006, I had a most enjoyable evening making homemade pasta. I was at home, which was the Sumner House, collaborating with a new friend on the extended process of rolling out long, elastic sheets of pasta using my old fashioned hand-cranked machine, and experimenting with an Emeril Lagasse recipe for vodka sauce.
The making of homemade pasta is a labor of love. At some point during the creation, I am bound to ask, “Why did we do this when we can buy perfectly good pasta for 99 cents a box?” And then…there is the final product: lovely, fresh noodles whose texture is in an entirely different universe than the dried boxed variety.
That night in January, the preparation didn’t seem quite as long and arduous as usual. I was enjoying the conversation and seemed to have a good teamwork vibe with my culinary companion. He was tall, dark, handsome, and charming, and I would have been inclined to Like him if he weren’t several years younger.
On January 13th, 2007, exactly one year later, I spent the day at an orientation session for the Haiti medical relief team I will be part of in March, along with my husband, Jonathan. He is still tall, dark, handsome, charming, and several years younger. I still like sharing space with him in the kitchen. And somehow, in a matter of 365 days, so much has changed…
It has been a year of wonders.
